The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium opened in 1947 in the Chamartín district of Madrid. At a capacity of 81,044, it is Spain's 2nd largest stadium, the 3rd largest stadium in Europe and the 14th largest football stadium in the world. It is the home stadium of Real Madrid, the richest football club in the world and one of the best-loved ones. Other than Real Madrid games, Bernabéu has also hosted major European and international football competitions, such as the European Cup final (1957, 1969, 1980), the finals for the European Nations' Cup (1964), the UEFA Champions League Final (2010) and the FIFA World Cup in 1982. The stadium has its own metro station along Madrid's Line 10, the Santiago Bernabéu station.
The History of the Bernabéu Stadium
Real Madrid had moved several stadiums before settling in Bernabéu Stadium: Campo de O'Donnell, Campo de Ciudad Linel and Estadio Chamartín. In the early 1950s, Real Madrid's president, Santiago Bernabéu, decided that the club needed a much larger stadium, and so a brand new stadium was built for this purpose, Nuevo Estadio Chamartín, which opened on December 14th, 1947. In 1955, the stadium was renamed Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, in honor of the Real Madrid's president.
Originally, the stadium's capacity was 75,145 (27,645 with seats). In the 1950s it underwent its first major renovation, during which it expanded to accommodate 125,000 spectators. In the early 1980s, in anticipation of the 1982 FIFA World Cup which the stadium was about to host, major renovations were made: a roof was installed to cover two-thirds of the seating area (in accordance with FIFA's requirements); its capacity was reduced from 120,000 to 90,800; its façade was remodeled; new electronic signs were installed; and several areas (such as the press areas and the locker rooms) were renovated.
In the 1990s, the stadium had to undergo expansion and remodeling once again, in accordance with UEFA's new safety standards following the rise in violence in European football stadiums. An amphitheater was created on the west side of the stadium, 20,200 seats were installed, the lighting was improved, and a retractable protective roof was put in place. In 1998, the stadium adopted an all-seating arrangement, which brought its capacity down from 110,000 to 75,328.
The 2000s saw more changes being made to Bernabéu, to fulfill the goal of Florentino Pérez, the club's new president, to make the stadium more comfortable to its wealthy clientele. The east side was expanded and several new features were added, such as a façade on Father Damien street, new VIP areas and boxes, new costumes, a new stage, new bars, new restaurants, and more. In future years, the stadium is to be further redeveloped: a new design for Bernabéu was unveiled in January 2014 by GMP, a German architecture firm.
